What back-stretching can teach you about breakthroughs


Part of my daily routine when exercising is to stretch my back in a wall knee-bent cobra pose for 5 minutes.

It looks like this.

It helps with posture, flexibility, and overall back pain remedy because I sit down for prolonged hours while working.

When I first started the routine, my body’s first reaction was to buckle up.

The muscles around my waist would tighten and my bum did the same.

Yes, I was scared; what if my back breaks. Haha.

But that’s not why my back buckled up.

It buckled up because resistance is the default reaction to any foreign move, foreign object, foreign idea, or foreign concept.

And we see this across history and society.

  • Europe’s resistance to industrialisation in the 18th to 19th Century
  • Women entering the workforce at different times across the world.

So when you are doing something that challenges the status quo and you get resistance from people or institutions, keep at it.

There’s always some resistance before a breakthrough.
